Reflecting on Success: WISE LA's Oceanside Ride and Athlete Chat

As the sun rose over the picturesque Santa Monica beach, a group of enthusiastic participants gathered for a morning bike ride and conversation. Hosted by WISE LA, the event promised a unique blend of outdoor adventure and insightful dialogue, all set against the backdrop of the majestic Pacific Ocean. With cruiser bikes with cute basket full of goodies at the ready and anticipation in the air, attendees prepared for a ride unlike any other.

The centerpiece of the event was an oceanside chat featuring three remarkable women, each with a wealth of experience in the world of athletics and beyond. Jenné Blackburn, author of “Always an Athlete”, led the discussion alongside Michelle Greco, former Seattle Storm and UCLA Women's Basketball player turned owner of Joyride Bike Rentals and Tours, and Bri Hamilton, a standout athlete in Cal State LA Track and Field and CAA Brand Sports. Together, they delved into the complex and often overlooked topic of life after sports.

As the group set off on their Joyride bike adventure, the conversation flowed effortlessly, touching on key themes that resonate with athletes of all levels. From the importance of community to the challenges of transitioning out of competitive sports, each speaker shared their unique insights and personal experiences. Participants listened intently as they pedaled along the beach, soaking in the wisdom and camaraderie that filled the air.

One of the recurring themes of the discussion was the crucial role that community plays in the lives of athletes, both during their careers and beyond. Whether it's finding support from fellow teammates or connecting with like-minded individuals post-retirement, the need for a strong support network was emphasized as essential for navigating life's transitions. As the group rode side by side, it was clear that they were not just participants in an event but members of a larger community bound together by a shared passion for sports. (WISE LA is filled with women who lead across the sports industry).

The conversation also touched on the importance of mental and physical health for athletes embarking on their next chapter. From maintaining a balanced lifestyle to seeking out resources for mental well-being, the panelists stressed the importance of prioritizing self-care and seeking help when needed. As the ocean breeze danced through the air and the waves crashed against the shore, participants were reminded of the healing power of nature and the importance of finding moments of peace and reflection amidst life's transitions.

As the participants paused to catch their breath and reflect on the insights shared during the oceanside chat, they couldn't help but draw parallels between the lessons learned on the field and the challenges they faced in their next chapters. The principles ingrained in them as athletes—teamwork, grit, and time management—served as invaluable tools for navigating life's transitions. Just as they once relied on their teammates to achieve victory on the court or track, they now leaned on their communities for support and collaboration in their professional and personal endeavors. The grit and resilience honed through years of training and competition became guiding forces as they tackled new challenges head-on, refusing to be deterred by setbacks or obstacles. And the discipline instilled in them by the rigors of athletic life translated seamlessly into effective time management skills, allowing them to juggle responsibilities and pursue their passions with purpose and determination. As they pedaled along the beach, these competitive athletes-turned-wellness athletes carried with them the knowledge that the lessons learned in sport are not confined to the field but serve as blueprints for success in every chapter of life.

As the ride came to a close, participants gathered for a well-deserved Gatorade refreshment and a copy of “Always An Athlete” to take home. With hearts full and minds buzzing with inspiration, they reflected on the success of the event and the valuable lessons learned along the way. For those who love the beach and a slow cruise bike ride, WISE LA's oceanside event proved to be an unforgettable experience—a perfect blend of adventure, connection, and reflection.
